This is my comparison of the movie and the book.

 

The same things

       The Summer of the Monkeys book and movie do not have very many similarities but, here are some. There was the corn crib where they kept the monkeys. The monkeys were in the bottoms when Jay Berry found them. Henri was the leader of the monkeys. Jay Berry gave his money to Daisy for her leg to get fixed. There was a pony that Jay Berry wanted to buy. They were a poor family. There was grandpa’s store where he talked with grandpa about catching the monkeys. Jay Berry wanted a .22 rifle. There was a really bad storm and Daisy slept with Jay Berry until the storm went over. Daisy had a crippled leg. Jay Berry went to the town with grandpa. Jay went to study how to catch monkeys. Jay Berry helped the monkeys when they were hurt by the storm.

The different things

       The Summer of the Monkeys book and movie have a lot of differences, here are some. Rowdy was not a bluetick hound. Jay Berry did not get to keep a .22 or his pony. There were only 4 monkeys instead of 29.  Bayliss Hatcher was in the movie. Jay did not have two options for a pony. Grandma was not there in the movie. There was Rose instead of Patty. There was no scene where Daisy got off the train. Jay Berry did not get drunk. Daisy came to the bottoms to follow Jay Berry. Daisy did not have a crutch. Jay and Rowdy never got bitten up by the monkeys. Some things got destroyed in the storm. The monkeys messed up the house. Henri was the leader instead of Jimbo (the original monkey). All of the monkeys were chimpanzees instead of only one being a chimpanzee.

Suggestions

       Too Disney I would make the suggestions of making Rowdy a bluetick hound. It bothered me that grandma was not in the movie. Jay Berry should get the pony and .22 rifle that he had been wanting. Jay Berry should be way more emotional about giving up the pony. It should have the scene where Daisy comes back from the hospital, off the train. It would make the movie much more exciting if Jay Berry got drunk from the monkeys giving him sourmash. There should not be the part when Rowdy gets hit with the trap. Jay Berry should use the traps like he has in the book. The movie should include Sally Gooden and Sloppy Ann. There could be Patty instead of Rose. It was a great movie I would have liked it more if it had all of these or I had not read the book. My suggestion to the book would be that Jay Berry does “Haul off and kiss her” her known as Patty.
